Ice Machine Evaporator Appearance Styles
Vertical
Vertical evaporators are commonly used in large-scale ice production machines, particularly cube ice machines or flake ice machines. With their upright design, these evaporators optimize space and allow for efficient heat transfer, leading to uniform ice formation.
Horizontal
In contrast to vertical evaporators, horizontal evaporators arrange the evaporator plates horizontally. These evaporators are common in ice machines that produce larger chunks of ice, such as ice block machines and are also used in smaller-scale commercial ice makers.
Drum
Drum evaporators use a rotating cylindrical drum partially submerged in water. As the drum rotates, a thin layer of water freezes on its surface, and a scraper removes the ice, creating thin flakes.
Plate
Tube evaporators are designed to produce cylindrical ice. Water flows through vertical tubes, where it freezes from the outside in. Once the ice reaches the desired thickness, it is cut into specific lengths.
Shell-and-Coil
Shell-and-coil evaporators feature a coil submerged in water. Ice forms around the coil, and a heating mechanism facilitates easy harvesting of the ice.
Ice Machine Evaporator Working Process
The refrigerant in an ice machine is stored in a compressor, which is a device that increases the pressure of the refrigerant. This causes the refrigerant to become a hot, high-pressure gas, which is then sent to the evaporator.
The evaporator is a heat exchanger, which means it is a device that allows heat to be transferred from one substance to another without the two substances coming into direct contact. In the case of an ice machine, the evaporator is a coil of tubing that is in contact with the water that will be turned into ice. As the hot, high-pressure gas from the compressor passes through the evaporator, it absorbs heat from the water, causing the water to cool and turn into ice.
